Florida cold snaps don’t last long, but they’re miserable without working heat. Poulin Cooling A/C and Refrigeration repairs heat pumps, electric heat strips, and ductless mini-splits throughout Clearwater and the Tampa Bay area.
Most Clearwater homes heat with a heat pump, so the same outdoor unit that cools in summer also heats in winter. When it stops heating, blows cool air, or leans on the backup heat strips, our technicians find the root cause and fix it right. And because heating problems never happen at a convenient time, emergency service is available after hours.
What’s going on with your heat?
These are the heating problems we see most in Clearwater homes. Call and we’ll diagnose it for you.
Cool or lukewarm air in heat mode, for more than a few minutes at a time.
The house never reaches the temperature you set, even with the system running.
A little frost is normal. Thick ice that doesn’t clear means a defrost or airflow problem.
If the backup heat strips run all the time, your heat pump isn’t doing its share.
A dusty smell that fades is normal. A strong or electrical smell needs a technician.
A spike in your electric bill often means the heat strips are working overtime.
No heat at all can point to a power, thermostat, or control board problem.
Grinding, squealing, or loud rattling from either unit means a part needs attention.
A system that keeps turning on and off wastes energy and wears out parts.
Done right the first time
Our licensed technicians service every major brand and carry common parts on the truck, so most repairs are finished in a single visit.
The reversing valve switches your heat pump between cooling and heating. When it sticks or fails, the system may blow cool air in heat mode. We test the valve and its solenoid to confirm the problem before replacing anything.
In cold, damp weather your heat pump runs short defrost cycles to melt frost off the outdoor coil. A failed defrost board or sensor lets ice build up and stops the system from heating. We diagnose and replace faulty defrost controls.
Electric heat strips in your air handler provide backup heat on the coldest days. Burned-out elements, failed sequencers, or bad relays can leave you without backup heat, or make the strips run when they shouldn’t.
Capacitors, contactors, relays, and fan motors are the most common causes of heat pump breakdowns. Our technicians test each component and carry common parts on the truck, so most of these repairs are done the same visit.
A heat pump low on refrigerant can’t move enough heat into your home. Low refrigerant is almost always a sign of a leak, so we find and fix the leak before recharging the system to the manufacturer’s specifications.
Sometimes the heat pump is fine and the thermostat is the problem. Wrong settings, loose wiring, or a thermostat that isn’t set up for a heat pump can cause no heat or constant aux heat. We repair, reprogram, or replace it.

FAQ
Answers to the questions Clearwater homeowners ask us most about heat pump and heating repair.
Still have questions?
Talk to a real person on our team. We’re happy to help you figure out what’s going on.
Signs include cool air in heat mode, a house that never warms up, thick ice on the outdoor unit, aux or emergency heat running all the time, burning or electrical smells, loud noises, and a sudden jump in your electric bill.
In cold, damp weather your heat pump runs a short defrost cycle, and the air can feel cool for a few minutes. That’s normal. If it lasts longer, the cause could be a stuck reversing valve, low refrigerant, a failed defrost control, or a thermostat problem.
A light layer of frost in cold weather is normal, and the defrost cycle should melt it. If the outdoor unit is covered in thick ice that doesn’t clear, turn the system to emergency heat and call us. Running it iced up can damage the unit.
Aux heat means the electric heat strips are helping your heat pump, which is normal on the coldest mornings and during defrost. If aux heat runs most of the time, your heat pump may not be heating properly. Emergency heat runs the strips only and should be used when the heat pump isn’t working.
A light dusty smell the first time you run the heat each year is common, because dust burns off the heat strips. It should fade within a few minutes. If the smell is strong, smells electrical, or doesn’t go away, turn the system off and call us.
Yes. Emergency heating repair is available after hours, including evenings and weekends. After-hours rates apply, and Ultimate Plan members pay no after-hours upcharge.
Repair costs vary based on the problem. Minor fixes like a capacitor or contactor cost much less than a compressor or reversing valve. A technician diagnoses the problem first, and you approve the price before any work starts. We also offer $100 off repairs over $1,000.
If your heat pump is less than 10 years old and the problem is a minor part, a repair usually makes sense. If it’s 10 to 15 years old or more, the compressor has failed, or you’re calling for repairs every season, a new system may be the better value. Estimates on new systems are free.
Yes. Our technicians service all major makes and models. We’re also a Ruud Pro Partner and an LG Pro Dealer.
