Heating Services in Clearwater & the Surrounding Areas

Most homes in Clearwater heat with a heat pump, the same outdoor unit that cools your home in summer. In winter it runs in reverse, pulling heat from the outside air and moving it inside. On the coldest mornings, electric heat strips in your air handler add backup heat.

When something goes wrong, you might notice cool air from the vents, a burning smell, or an electric bill that jumps as the heat strips work overtime. Our technicians diagnose the real cause, explain your options, and get your heat back on.

We also install new heat pumps with free in-home estimates, and our maintenance plans include a winter visit to keep your system ready for cold weather.

How Florida homes heat

Heat Pump or Heat Strips?

Most Homes Use Both

Your heat pump does most of the work, and it’s very efficient on Florida’s mild winter days. Electric heat strips in the air handler switch on as backup when it’s near freezing or while the heat pump defrosts. They warm the house quickly but cost much more to run.

If your thermostat shows aux or emergency heat most of the time, your heat pump may need service. Read more in heat pumps vs. heat strips.

FAQ

Heating FAQs

What kind of heating do most Clearwater homes have?

Most homes in Clearwater use a heat pump, which heats and cools with the same outdoor unit, plus electric heat strips in the air handler for backup on the coldest days. Some homes and additions use ductless mini-splits, which also heat.

During cold, damp weather your heat pump runs a short defrost cycle, and the air can feel cool for a few minutes. That’s normal. If it blows cool air for longer, the cause could be low refrigerant, a failed reversing valve, or a thermostat or electrical problem. Call us and we’ll find out.

A light dusty smell the first time you run the heat each year is common, because dust burns off the heat strips. It should fade within a few minutes. If the smell is strong, smells electrical, or doesn’t go away, turn the system off and call us.

Once a year, before winter, is best. All of our maintenance plans include a winter visit where we clean the electric heater, clear the drain line, and check your system.

If your heat pump is less than 10 years old and the problem is a minor part, a repair usually makes sense. If it’s 10 to 15 years old or more, the compressor has failed, or you’re calling for repairs every season, a new system may be the better value. We’ll give you an honest recommendation.

Yes, estimates on new heat pumps and other new systems are free. Repairs start with a diagnostic visit so we can find the problem and give you an accurate price.
