It’s Not Just Direct Lightning Strikes

A direct lightning strike is not the only threat. Nearby lightning, utility switching, and power restoration after an outage can also produce transient voltage surges that travel through a home’s electrical system.

Layered protection can reduce risk, but no surge protector guarantees protection against a direct lightning strike or every possible electrical disturbance 

It should be noted that surge protectors do not last forever. After a major electrical event, and during routine service, the device’s status indicator and condition should be checked to confirm that it is still providing protection. 

Signs Your System Needs an Electrical Diagnosis After a Storm 

  • The system does not restart after power is restored
  • The thermostat is blank, unresponsive, or displaying new error codes
  • Breakers or fuses trip repeatedly
  • The outdoor or indoor unit fails to respond normally
  • Electrical components fail repeatedly without a clear mechanical cause

These symptoms do not prove that a surge caused the problem, but the electrical system and controls should be checked as part of the diagnosis.
